What happened

France’s energy sector is under new scrutiny as maintenance on many of the country’s critical nuclear reactors continues just as Europe prepares for another winter. This is why nuclear reactors generate 65% to 70% of France’s electricity, which represents the highest share of nuclear production globally and has historically allowed France to export excess clean energy to neighboring nations.

Despite the rapid progress made in recent years in clean energy production in most major European economies, France still accounts for more than 25% of total clean energy production in the European Union, according to data from the think tank Ember.
