What happened

Since April, the Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine has maintained five reactors in cold shutdown and only one in hot shutdown to generate steam to process liquid radioactive waste and heat water. Ahead of the winter season, it was decided to put another reactor in hot shutdown. The IAEA suggested that the plant find an alternative, external source of steam generation to cover its needs and allow all reactors to remain in cold shutdown. This is because the dam rupture several months ago caused a limitation of the water supply for the cooling needed by the plant.
