According to the World Health Organization, 28 African countries plan to introduce a WHO-recommended malaria vaccine as part of their national immunization programs. The R21 Matrix M vaccine is the second malaria vaccine approved by WHO, following the RTS, S/AS01 vaccine. Both vaccines are shown to be safe and effective in preventing malaria in children and are expected to have a high public health impact. Adding another vaccine is very important because it allows one to administer it to as many children as possible and in as many areas as possible.
