China approves construction of two nuclear power facilities at $11.5bn cost

The Chinese government has approved the construction of two Nuclear Power Plants at a cost of USD 11.5 billion. The State Council approved phase II of the Zhangzhou project in Fujian province and phase I of the Lianjiang project in Guangdong province. According to the CNNC’s China National Nuclear Power, the two projects will have the capacity to generate more than 1.2GW of electricity each. The approvals came at a time when the country is experiencing a power shortage, which has led to the closure of industries and electricity rationing.
