What happened

The construction of the initial pair of CAP1000 reactors, each with a capacity of 1250 MWe, which are the Chinese counterpart of the Westinghouse AP1000, was given the green light by China’s State Council in September 2022. The excavation work for these units commenced during the same month.

Unit 1’s nuclear island foundation marked a significant achievement when the first concrete was poured and completed on September 29th, following 53 hours of non-stop efforts, as announced by the State Power Investment Corp (SPIC). This milestone signifies the transition of the project’s initial phase into a new construction stage.

Notably, the concrete pouring was concluded 7 hours ahead of the predetermined schedule. Among the four units authorized within the same timeframe, this particular unit was the first to achieve First Concrete Pouring (FCD) and set a record for the swiftest FCD process among units of its kind, as stated by the company.
