Researchers found that a combination of Streptococcus and Lactococcus was associated with an increased risk of wheezing – a key early sign of asthma. The cause of the occurrence of this mix of bacteria in nurseries may lie in cleaning and ventilation and in general the air quality in rooms. Being able to determine these risk factors could help to understand how to improve conditions and inform public health strategies for preventing chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma in children.Â
