A case of native Dengue infection has been reported in Catalonia, the first of its kind in 4 years. This situation, which is still an exception today, could become common with globalization and climate change. Dengue is a viral infection that is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes and can be fatal. It is found mainly in areas with tropical climates. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches and nausea.
There are currently no specific dengue treatments or vaccines available that provide sufficient protection. “Doctors Without Borders” has launched an innovative method to reduce the risk: the “World Mosquito Program”. The method involves releasing mosquitoes carrying Wolbachia bacteria, which reduces the ability of these insects to transmit the virus, with the goal of reducing the number of people affected by Dengue.
