The Pile Fuel Cladding Silo, one of the oldest waste stores and one of the highest hazard facilities on the UK, holds over 3200 cubic metres of intermediate-level waste. Sellafield Ltd designed, tested and installed 9 huge modules containing the machinery needed to empty the silo for the facility to be decommissioned. Operators have used the grab to take the waste from the silo and place it in a specially designed 3-cubic-metre stainless-steel box. Once the box is filled it will be transported to a designated space at the Sellafield site. The goal is to create a clean and safe environment for future generations.
