What happened

A 29-year-old female patient passed away while undergoing a cryotherapy session at a fitness centre in Paris. Another 34-year-old female patient is currently in critical condition in the intensive care unit (ICU). The prevailing hypothesis concerning the cause of death is that it resulted from a nitrogen leak from one of the treatment rooms. It has been reported that the two women suffered a cardiac arrest, which resulted in the death of the younger woman by suffocation. Three other individuals who administered resuscitation procedures to the victims were admitted to the hospital, but their lives were not in danger. As a precautionary measure, the entire building, which was occupied by 150 individuals, was evacuated. Police investigations are underway to ascertain whether the malfunction of the cryotherapy apparatus, which utilised liquid nitrogen, was the cause. Liquid nitrogen (or nitrous oxide) is a colourless, odourless gas used to treat inflammatory conditions by briefly exposing the human body to temperatures below 100°C. According to Roberto Valeriani, a specialist in Plastic Surgery and a holder of a PhD in Applied Medical Surgical Sciences, who provided commentary on the case, given the demanding nature of the treatment, it is imperative to balance the necessity of maintaining the machine with the requisite care in evaluating the suitability of the patient.
