What happened

As of early April, Vietnam has recorded over 54,000 measles cases. The Ministry of Health expects a general decrease in the outbreak in the coming months, but suspected cases will likely continue to be reported across the country. Meanwhile, the Institute of Tropical Medicine (Bach Mai Hospital) reported last week the first death from measles in an adult this year. The deceased person had chronic health conditions like diabetes and obstructive pulmonary disease. To limit the number of deaths, the Ministry of Health suggests enhanced prevention and control measures for groups at high risk of developing severe complications related to measles. These groups include people over 50 years old and with chronic lung disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. The Department of Disease Prevention, part of the Ministry of Health, recommends that these high-risk categories proactively get vaccinated against measles and immediately go to medical facilities for examination and treatment advice. They should also limit contact with suspected or confirmed measles cases, wearing a mask and washing hands after necessary contact with an ill person. The department also recommends to improve personal hygiene and physical condition to increase resistance to the disease. Finally, people in high-risk groups should practice good environmental hygiene and regularly clean their living, working, and studying places.
