What happened

Fiji’s health authorities have declared a dengue fever outbreak for the Central Division. There has been a surge in cases across the area over the last three weeks, including in Suva. Therefore, local hospitals have reported increased admissions and above-expected numbers of patients compared to the same period last year. The Central Division has reported over 1000 confirmed cases of dengue fever in the first three months of 2025.
According to a government statement, dengue cases are further expected to rise due to heavy rainfall and flooding in the past few months. In response, the Ministry of Health is implementing its Dengue Outbreak Response Plan and continues to monitor the situation at a local and national level. It is also working to deliver essential medicines to healthcare facilities across the country to treat dengue cases. While the Central Division faces a significant increase in cases, the Western Division has started to report a gradual improvement in the dengue outbreak in its territory. At a national level, Fiji has recorded 5128 dengue fever cases since the beginning of January. A secondary school student died last month from the disease.
