What happened

In Milan, a National Document has been endorsed by four prominent Italian Scientific Societies: the Italian Association of Hospital Pulmonologists (AIPO-ITS/ETS), the Italian Society of Infectious and Tropical Diseases (SIMIT), the Italian Society of Pulmonology (SIP/IRS), and the Italian Society of Hygiene, Preventive Medicine and Public Health (SITI). This document presents scientific evidence and offers recommendations regarding vaccination against key respiratory pathogens, including respiratory syncytial virus, influenza, SARS-CoV-2, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and varicella-zoster virus (VZR). These pathogens present substantial risks to individuals with chronic respiratory illnesses and place considerable strain on the National Health Service. Claudio Micheletto, President of AIPO-ITS/ETS and Director of the UOC Pneumology at the Integrated University Hospital of Verona, highlighted the unified stance of the Italian scientific societies involved in respiratory disease management, advocating for a comprehensive understanding of the issue. Roberto Parrella, President of SIMIT and Director of the UOC Infectious Diseases with a respiratory focus at AORN Ospedali dei Colli, ‘Monaldi-Cotugno-CTO’ of Naples, also emphasized the necessity of a holistic strategy for managing patients with chronic respiratory conditions, viewing vaccination as an essential component of their prevention and treatment plan.
