A recent development in the ongoing foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak in Hungary has led to the discovery of a significant quantity of bodily fluids emanating from the ground in a field near Hegyeshalom. This discovery follows the burial of over 3,000 cattle that have perished due to the virulent pathogen. Residents have expressed concerns that the carcasses may contaminate wells on neighbouring farms. In the nearby town of Hegyeshalom, an emergency meeting was convened in the office of Mayor László Szőke, who appealed to the authorities for reassurance. According to Dr. Szabolcs Pásztor, the national chief veterinarian, the destruction of animal carcasses is being carried out by the relevant regulations, and the phenomenon of decomposition is caused by the high number of animals killed. He further stated that the grave would be permanently covered within the coming days.
