What happened

New Zealand has announced it will spend billions of dollars on a major military overhaul, prioritising areas such as improved strike capabilities, long-range drones, cyber security, and border surveillance. Amid rising global tensions, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said the country would increase its defence spending from one per cent of GDP to more than two per cent over the next 10 years. The increase in military spending will also lead to closer cooperation between the militaries of New Zealand and Australia, both members of the “Five Eyes” intelligence-sharing alliance with the United States, Britain, and Canada.
