Between March 11 and March 31, the district of Ernakulam recorded 110 cases of hepatitis A. The highest number occurred on March 22, with 22 cases in an apartment complex in Thrikkakara. Other significant spikes were reported on March 13 (14 cases), March 18 (11 cases), and March 29 (12 cases). According to the local Department of Health, the total number of cases in the district since February 1 has been over 320. Health authorities have linked the rise in cases to the ingestion of contaminated food and water. In response, they have asked local bodies across the district to ensure the super-chlorination of water sources, especially wells. Apartment complexes have also been advised to ensure that the water distributed in tankers is safe for consumption. Finally, directives have been issued to food outlets to prevent using contaminated food and water, threatening severe sanctions for any violation of food safety norms.
