What happened

The French Senate has approved by a majority vote a bill to speed up procedures relating to the construction of new Nuclear Power Plants near existing nuclear sites and to the operation of existing plants.

The approved text provides for the removal of the objective of reducing the nuclear share of France’s electricity production to 50% by 2035. The nuclear share will be maintained at over 50% of electricity production by 2050, with the possibility of building Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) by the same date.

Nuclear operators are also given the option of using an immediate possession procedure to obtain land on which to build new nuclear reactors.
