Two new outbreaks of Newcastle disease in Poland have resulted in the loss of 23,410 birds. According to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), the outbreaks were in two domestic poultry flocks in Helenów and Tarnów. The Helenów flock included 11,009 animals, of which 400 died from symptoms related to the disease. All the others were culled. The Tarnów flock had instead 12,401 birds – 8400 died from the disease, and the other 4001 were euthanized. Control measures were implemented in both outbreak sites, including disinfection, zoning, surveillance within the restricted zone, traceability, and the destruction of animal products.
Since 2024, dozens of flocks in Poland have been struck by Newcastle disease, leading to the loss of over 4 million birds. WOAH also reports other animal disease outbreaks in the country, including avian influenza, African swine fever, and Bluetongue virus.
