The New York City Department of Health has reported the detection of avian influenza in two domestic felines residing in separate residences within the city. Veterinary authorities are collaborating with the Department of Health to ascertain the mode of transmission. Instances of avian influenza in felines have been verified in other regions of the United States. The NYC Department of Health has issued a statement concerning a possible correlation between avian influenza and pet food consisting of raw poultry. Veterinarians are advising pet owners regarding the potential hazards associated with the consumption of raw food products or unpasteurized milk. It is also recommended that pet owners restrict feline access to outdoor environments where exposure to wild birds or other animals, which may serve as a source of infection, is possible. Experts believe that the current risk posed by avian influenza to the general public remains minimal, as current evidence suggests that avian influenza viruses have not yet developed the ability to spread from human to human.
