The Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan has heightened international concerns about terrorism, which can rapidly spread. The US and its allies have already expressed concern about the potential threats to global security emanating from Afghanistan. Almost all international discussions on Afghanistan include these concerns. The Taliban, a group that until recently was known as a terrorist organization, now rules the country.
During their May 2023 meeting, the G7 urged the Taliban to combat terrorism in Afghanistan and meet their obligations to the international community by preventing the use of Afghan soil to threaten or attack any country, plan or finance terrorist acts, or provide a safe haven for any terrorist group.
