The Provincial Command of the Guardia di Finanza of Parma, Italy, has seized 88 cosmetic items due to the presence of a component considered harmful to well-being. These items were available for purchase at a business location within the urban area. Identified during a site inspection as part of regional economic surveillance, the products were intended for personal grooming and contained the substance “Lilial,” also known as ‘Butylphenyl Methylpropional.’ As per EU Regulation 1902/2021, the manufacture and distribution of this substance have been prohibited since March 2022. The Committee for Risk Assessment of the European Chemicals Agency has classified this ingredient as a carcinogenic and toxic substance, indicating a potential hazard to human health. Subsequent inquiries have indicated that manufacturers had previously removed these products from general distribution and ceased their production, presumably for sale in alternative markets.
