What happened

A violent clash in Balochistan between 31 January and 1 February left 18 security personnel and 12 terrorists dead. The incident took place in Mangochar, Kalat district, when terrorists attempted to block roads. Authorities condemned the attack as a terrorist act aimed at destabilising the region and targeting innocent civilians. Although no group claimed responsibility, Pakistan’s security forces vowed to pursue those responsible and continue operations to maintain peace and stability in Balochistan, which faces regular attacks from local extremists. Following the violation of a ceasefire accord by the militant group Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), there has been an escalation in terrorist attacks in Pakistan. According to reports in the local media, 2024 became the deadliest year for Pakistan’s civilian and military security forces in a decade, with at least 685 security personnel losing their lives in a total of 444 terrorist attacks.
