What happened

Several cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) have been reported in the Umzinyathi district, KwaZulu-Natal. The province is affected by a major outbreak of the disease, with over 330 cases. Most of them have been found in day-care centres and crèches. There is no specific treatment or vaccine for HFMD, making prevention crucial. To reduce the spread, health authorities recommend avoiding contact with infected individuals, washing hands frequently, covering mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and cleaning and disinfecting surfaces and objects regularly. Symptoms of HFMD are similar to chickenpox, with fever, sore throat, and sores on the hands, feet, and mouth. Parents and caregivers are urged to be vigilant and keep children at home if they show symptoms. The infection usually clears without medication after 7 to 10 days.
