What happened

In France, a well-known type of raw milk cheese has been subject to a product recall following the detection of Escherichia coli (STEC), a suspected cause of haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This recall represents the second instance of the same product being withdrawn from sale. This recall follows epidemiological investigations conducted in January of this year, following the reporting of 11 cases of HUS in adults by French health authorities. These investigations traced the origin of the infection back to the consumption of raw milk cheeses produced by a company with a production plant in Machecoul-Saint-Meme. The company was suspected of being contaminated by Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC).
