What happened

A significant increase in individuals exhibiting flu-like symptoms has been observed in Miami-Dade and Broward (Florida) urgent care and emergency rooms (ERs). This phenomenon coincides with a nationwide surge in infections, reaching levels not observed for over a decade. Notably, for the first time since the start of the pandemic in 2020, influenza-related hospitalizations and deaths have surpassed those attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the latest report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the 2024-2025 flu season has reached significant spikes across all age groups for the first time since 2017-2018. The state of Florida has reported a high rate of infection with the A H1N1 influenza strain, which was responsible for a global influenza pandemic in 2009 and circulates seasonally. Concurrently, the southern region of Florida is grappling with a multifaceted respiratory illness, characterised by the circulation of other viruses such as SARS-CoV-2, RSV, and various forms of pneumonia, along with a prevalence of gastrointestinal viruses, notably norovirus.

To mitigate the risk of infection, health authorities have issued a set of recommendations. These include adherence to key hygiene practices such as frequent handwashing, the uptake of preventative vaccinations, and the use of respiratory masks in crowded areas. Additionally, it is advised to isolate oneself in the event of symptoms during the flowering phase and to refrain from attending school or work.
