What happened

According to a statement released by the General Directorate of National Security and Territorial Surveillance, the Moroccan authorities foiled a high-risk terrorist attack on Wednesday 19 February. The Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) launched a nationwide counter-terrorism operation based on precise information gathered by the Directorate General of Territorial Surveillance (DGST). Several teams operated in cities that included Laâyoune, Casablanca, Fez, Taza, Tangier, Azemmour, Jerrada, Oulad Taima, and Tamesna. A total of 12 militants aged between 18 and 40 were arrested, all of whom were involved in planning terrorist attacks. Evidence seized during house searches included a range of bladed weapons, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and chemical components. An investigation linked the terrorist cell to a prominent ISIS leader in the Sahel region, who is deemed to be responsible for financing and providing logistical support for the operation. Authorities continue to investigate the suspects and determine the full extent of their international links.
