Update on the mpox outbreak in Central African Republic

What happened

Between the 29th of January and the 4th of February, 2025, 15 new suspected cases of mpox were reported in the Mbaïki health district. Among these, one new confirmed case was recorded, resulting in a total of eight confirmed cases in the district. Notably, no deaths were reported during this period. The cumulative number of suspected cases in 2025 stands at 76, including eight confirmed cases, with five of these cases reported in the Mbaïki health district. Since the onset of 2024, a total of 588 suspected cases have been documented, with 99 confirmed cases and three fatalities, resulting in a case fatality rate of 3%. The median age of confirmed cases is 12 years, ranging from two months to 58 years, with males exhibiting a slightly higher prevalence (sex ratio of 1.7). Three health districts continue to experience active outbreaks.
