What happened

According to the WHO African Region Weekly Bulletin on Outbreaks and Other Emergencies (Week 06: 03-09 February 2025), the Sudan Virus Disease (SVD) outbreak in Uganda continues to evolve with new cases reported. In epidemiological week 6 (3-9 February 2025), seven confirmed cases were recorded in five districts, all linked to the index case. As of 9 February 2025, a total of nine confirmed cases and one death (CFR 11.1%) have been documented in Wakiso (4 cases), Kampala (2), Mbale (1), Jinja (1) and Mukono (1). The index case has died, while the remaining eight cases are being treated at Mulago National Referral Hospital (seven cases) and Mbale Regional Referral Hospital (one case). A total of 308 contacts have been identified, of which 265 have been classified as high risk and placed in designated quarantine facilities. Intensive contact tracing and daily surveillance are ongoing to prevent further transmission. The evolution of the outbreak highlights the need for strict containment measures, enhanced surveillance and effective case management. Strengthening infection prevention and control (IPC) measures and community engagement remains critical to contain the spread.
