What happened

Angola has vaccinated over one million people in the three provinces most affected by the ongoing cholera epidemic. This was achieved in a five-day campaign to implement health measures to contain the infectious disease. As of 11 February 2025, 3,047 cases and 180 deaths have been reported in eight provinces, with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 3.4%. The Ministry of Health has led this vaccination campaign, with support from key-partners including the WHO, UNICEF, the World Bank, the International Red Cross (ICRC), and the private sector. The WHO supported the Angolan Government by purchasing 978,000 vaccine doses through the International Vaccine Procurement Coordination Group. The vaccination campaign was overseen by a team of over 6,400 people, including health workers and volunteers, who provided information on preventive measures such as good hygiene practices and access to safe drinking water. The WHO and key-partners have reaffirmed their commitment by supporting the local government in drafting a national cholera response plan, through the provision of medical supplies, the strengthening of the skills of health professionals, the distribution of water treatment solutions, the implementation of basic health measures, and community mobilisation.
