On 26 November 2024, two technicians at the Borssele Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) came into contact with radioactive material during a maintenance operation. The NPP operator had only recently reported the accident and stated that the safety of the plant had not been compromised. The workers wore respirators to avoid internal contamination, but the material touched their skin. A third worker, not wearing a mask, left the area as soon as the alarm was sounded and remained unharmed. The release of a small amount of radioactive material activated the monitoring systems and led to immediate evacuation. Subsequent medical checks ruled out internal contamination. Following the clean-up, activities have resumed regularly. The EPZ has launched an investigation to determine the causes of the incident and to strengthen safety measures. The EPZ management company has confirmed that safety protocols have been followed and that there is no risk to the local community or the environment.
