According to Joël Barre, the man appointed by French President Macron to oversee the revival of nuclear energy in the country, renewable energies are not enough to counteract ongoing climate change. France has been critical of the EU’s efforts to phase out nuclear power, and of the position of Germany, which is preparing to close its last three nuclear reactors. Barre argues for a strong and consolidated energy policy in Europe based on a mix of energy sources. Detractors point to problems with existing reactors, as well as delays and costs for building new ones. This would make nuclear power a transitional technology rather than the future of clean energy.
