What happened

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have published a scientific opinion based on a ‘One Health’ approach, in which they assess the mutations of avian pathogens and the likelihood that they will spread to humans, thereby triggering future pandemics. In particular, experts from the two EU agencies identified 34 genetic mutations that could increase the risk of avian influenza viruses spreading to humans. The Director of the ECDC, Pamela Rendi-Wagner, emphasised the agency’s ongoing dedication to assisting Member States of the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA) in preparing for, preventing and containing potential future outbreaks in animals and humans. The Acting Executive Director of the EFSA, Bernhard Url, underscored the significance of identifying crucial virus mutations promptly, ensuring a swift and effective response to potentially critical situations.
