A case of meningococcal meningitis has been reported in Empoli, in the province of Florence, Italy, where a minor girl was admitted to the ‘Meyer’ paediatric hospital in Florence. The Local Health Authority (ASL) Toscana Centro has initiated the necessary measures to contain the risk of contagion, commencing an epidemiological investigation to trace the young girl’s close contacts. Collaboration with the school management facilitated the expeditious identification of the patient’s family members, acquaintances, and classmates, all undergoing pharmacological prophylaxis. According to the ASL Toscana Centro, the young patient is responding positively to the therapy. Meningococcal meningitis is an infectious disease that can manifest rapidly and with severe consequences; however, timely prophylaxis and adequate care can mitigate the risk of complications and contain the spread. Consequently, health authorities emphasise the importance of adhering to health recommendations and the timely identification of symptoms associated with the disease, which frequently manifest as fever, headache, skin redness, and stiffness of the neck, as well as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light.
