What happened

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed by EDF, EDISON, and ENEA to implement innovative small-scale nuclear technologies, including small modular reactors (SMRs). The three nuclear companies are committed to collaborating on industrial applications of the latest-generation SMRs, which are considered necessary to achieve the carbon neutrality objectives set at the European level and to ensure the security of the energy system at the same time. The collaboration will focus on the analysis of thermo-hydraulic and passive safety systems, new technologies, the integral functioning of the system, and the opportunity to provide electricity and heat in cogeneration mode for industrial purposes, the three actors say. The protocol also includes training activities and an exchange of know-how between researchers and PhD students. The agreement will, it is claimed, strengthen the ‘Italian role in Europe in the development of innovative nuclear technologies.’ This assertion is made by Alessandro Dodaro, the director of the nuclear department of ENEA, the national agency for new technologies, energy, and sustainable economic development. This collaboration will assist in overcoming the obstacles that limit the spread of SMRs in Europe, according to Bernard Salha, chief technical officer of the French group.
