Death from meningitis confirmed in Correggio

The Management of the USL-IRCCS Company of Reggio Emilia, Italy, has confirmed the case of suspected meningitis in the 33-year-old man who died in Correggio on January 4, 2025. Laboratory tests have isolated the bacterium Neisseria Meningitidis serogroup B (Meningococcus B). To prevent the spread of the disease, the Hygiene and Public Health Service has taken steps to identify close contacts (family, work, and social) to be subjected to prophylaxis measures. Given the mode of transmission of the bacterial infection, people who have had close and prolonged contact with the patient in the 7 days preceding the illness are at risk of contagion. The incubation period varies from 2 to 10 days, usually 3-4 days. Any appearance of symptoms in the 4 weeks following the last contact with the patient, such as fever associated with intense malaise, intense headache, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, and petechiae, require contacting the attending physician, health authorities warn.
