What happened

In response to cyber security threats that have been on the rise in recent years, Lithuania has announced the creation of a new cyber unit that will be responsible for the planning and execution of operations in cyberspace. This military unit, named the Lithuanian Cyber Command (LTCYBERCOM), will complement the existing National Cyber Security Centre in managing cyber incident response and resilience in critical government sectors. The command structure comprises a headquarters that oversees centralised cyber operations; a communications and information systems battalion; and a cyber defence command specialising in the provision of information technology services. As Russia has reportedly conducted numerous cyber attacks against NATO countries, LTCYBERCOM will play a critical role as an enabler for military planning and action coordination in cyberspace, as Lithuanian Deputy Defence Minister Tomas Godliauskas pointed out.
