The creation of a new office dedicated to the integration of artificial intelligence into military systems has been announced by the US Department of Defense. It will aim to advance the nation’s defense capabilities and explore the applications of generative AI in autonomous weapons and command-and-control systems. To support its research and development, this office, known as the Artificial Intelligence Rapid Capabilities Cell (AI RCC), will be awarded $100 million in funding for the fiscal years 2024 and 2025. A portion of this funding will go to industry partners, enabling them to investigate the potential applications of AI solutions in defense systems. Operating under the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO), the AI RCC takes an all-hands-on-deck approach to determine where these new technologies can be more effective.
