A new case of the not-yet-identified Congo disease has been documented in Italy. A 24-year-old female patient presented with symptoms analogous to those described for the disease, which is prevalent in the Panzi region, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and remains undiagnosed. This patient was admitted to the hospital in Cosenza recently. Information from medical records indicates that this patient returned from Africa on 29 November and promptly sought medical care at the hospital, citing a fever and other ailments. In collaboration with the provincial health authority, the hospital in Cosenza has directed that the tests be forwarded to the Higher Institute of Health in Rome for further comprehensive analysis. It has been reported that the risk of contagion is minimal. In a statement released by the Cosenza Provincial Health Authority, Medical Director Martino Rizzo asserted that. According to Francesco Vaia, Director of Prevention at the Italian Ministry of Health, the currently unidentified disease is believed to be limited to the DRC. The illness may be the consequence of poverty and malnutrition, which are associated with a range of co-morbidities that predominantly affect young children. Therefore, in Europe, the risk to public health is considered to be significantly lower than in African regions.
