What happened

In light of the still-unknown disease that has resulted in over 70 fatalities in the Panzi region of Congo, the Italian government has intensified its surveillance efforts. A recent communication from the Ministry of Health has directed the attention of the Health Ministry’s Maritime, Air, and Border Health Offices to heightened vigilance at all entry points, particularly those for direct flights from the country. Maria Rosaria Campitiello, Head of the Prevention and Health Emergencies Department of the Ministry of Health, maintains that the situation is being monitored with ‘dutiful attention’ and without ‘alarmism.’ She emphasizes the importance of ‘active surveillance and constant monitoring,’ which are currently underway. Carlo Perno, head of Microbiology and Immunology Diagnostics at ‘Bambino Gesù Paediatric Hospital’ in Rome, highlights the importance of deploying international mobile laboratories to the affected area with minimal delay. These specialized units, which are currently operational in Italy, some other European countries, and the United States, can be set up within 24 hours and are equipped with cutting-edge instruments, dedicated personnel, and protection systems. Advanced machinery allows the isolation, transport, and analysis of harmful pathogens, providing quick diagnostic insights.
