What happened

In consideration of the anticipated peak in influenza cases during the Christmas holiday period, the regional health authorities of Emilia Romagna, Italy, have intensified their efforts to promote influenza vaccination. Gian Luigi Belloli, director of the provincial Public Hygiene Department, has stated that 31,424 doses of the influenza vaccine have been administered by general practitioners and pharmacies in Forlì, while 34,610 doses have been administered in Cesena. In response to the increased demand for vaccinations, the supply in the city’s outpatient clinics has been augmented, particularly for patients with chronic illnesses and pregnant women. In addition to administering the influenza vaccine, protection against the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is also ongoing. Nevertheless, the results of this vaccination have not met expectations, according to Belloli. A promising indicator is the increased adherence to the vaccination campaign among paediatric populations, particularly among children aged 6 months to 6 years, compared to the previous winter season. This can be largely attributed to the introduction of the nasal vaccine, which has contributed to enhanced compliance.
