The UK telecommunications giant BT Group has confirmed an attempted compromise of its video conferencing platform after the ransomware group Black Basta claimed to have obtained corporate data. According to a company spokesperson, the incident affected only some elements of the platform, immediately isolated and deactivated, without impacting BT Conferencing’s active services or other business and customer systems. BT, which employs around 100,000 people and recorded revenues of over £20 billion in 2023, stressed that its main telephone infrastructure was unaffected. Black Basta, known for attacks on critical sectors, has posted on its darknet site files that appear to contain personal employee data, confidentiality agreements, and other sensitive documents. BT is working with regulatory authorities and law enforcement to investigate the incident.
