To test its chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) operability in urban environments, the U.S. National Guard held a three-day exercise in Massachusetts. The in-state 1st Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team (1st CST) was deployed to an empty school as part of the training to handle a hypothetical laboratory accident, including injuries and the possible discharge of hazardous waste. Two days later, another operation mimicked a mall chemical attack. The unit performed CBRN tasks in distinct phases throughout the exercise. Each division consisted of a survey team and a sample collection team collaborating with commanders and civilian authority figures. Threat identification, consequence assessments, and response strategies by U.S. Army Northern Command real-world standards were the main objectives of the missions.
