What happened

The former ‘Gavoglio’ Barracks in Genoa will be the setting for the clearance operations that are necessary to remove the explosive remnants of war (ERW) stored within the military complex. To complete the operations, which should last four days, the intervention of the bomb disposal squad of the 32nd Guastatori Engineers of Fossano will be required. The team will be responsible for the final removal of the bombs, four Italian artillery shells dating to the period of the site’s activity, which were previously stored within the former barracks. The latter has been subject to a complex urban regeneration project for several years. The operations entail ensuring the security of the load and transporting it in a protected column to the quarries situated above Pegli, in the Varenna Valley. There, the ordnance will be subjected to controlled blasting step-by-step.
