The California Department of Public Health has confirmed its first case of the most contagious form of mpox. The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has urged doctors to be alert for patients with possible symptoms. It has been confirmed that the case is linked to the epidemic in central and eastern Africa, as the person was returning from a trip to those areas: the patient is now at home and improving. So far this year, more than 3,000 cases of mpox have been reported in the country, with more than 100 cases in Florida. In August, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global public health emergency and more than 100,000 cases have been reported globally. The disease manifests itself with fever and rashes, and in some cases can lead to complications. Infected people should isolate themselves until symptoms disappear to prevent the spread of the virus, which usually takes two to four weeks. To reduce the risk of getting mpox, the CDC recommends that you wash your hands frequently, avoid close contact with infected people, and if you travel to an area where mpox is endemic, especially Central or West Africa, avoid contact with animals that can carry the virus, such as rodents and primates. Public health experts recommend that people who have been exposed to someone with mpox, or who are at high risk of exposure, get vaccinated.
