What happened

The Imo State Police Command has reported the deaths of two young men, suspected members of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Orlu. According to the police, the suspects were carrying an improvised explosive device (IED) on a motorcycle, allegedly intending to plant it at Orlu International Market, near Mbari Okporo. The device detonated prematurely, killing both men instantly and averting a potentially severe tragedy. The blast injured two bystanders, who were immediately taken to a hospital for medical care. Preliminary investigations link the deceased individuals to earlier IED explosions in Omuma and Orlu this month, incidents that resulted in injuries to two civilians. Police confirmed that further inquiries are underway to substantiate their involvement in these prior attacks. In response to the incident, Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, conducted an on-site evaluation alongside Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists. Danjuma expressed sympathy for the injured and assured the public that the area had been cleared of any additional explosive threats. He also announced that security has been heightened across Orlu to prevent future incidents.
