What happened

In response to the World Health Organisation’s declaration of a Marburg epidemic in Rwanda on 27 September, the National Institute for Infectious Diseases (INML) Lazzaro Spallanzani, based in Rome, has intensified its training programmes on the specifics of high isolation, updated the availability of personal protective equipment (PPE) and established facilities to receive immediately any patients. In particular, these facilities are configured to accommodate individuals diagnosed with highly contagious BSL-4 diseases (Biosafety Level 4) and those requiring invasive respiratory support or who are clinically stable, as stated in a note issued by the INML. The high-isolation ward at the Spallanzani led by Emanuele Nicastri is dedicated to the highly specialised management of patients suffering from pathogens belonging to group 4, or those with unknown etiology and a high mortality rate or high incidence of disabling or permanent sequelae. It operates according to protocols set forth by the Ministry of Health, which are designed to ensure the safety of the patient, and healthcare workers, and to guarantee the security of patient transport, the handling of biological samples, and instrumental investigations.
