What happened

The emergence of the XEC variant of the SARS-CoV-2 viral strain has prompted significant concern among public health experts. According to the Italian virologist Fabrizio Pregliasco, this variant will likely become dominant over the coming months, with an especially significant impact in Italy. The distinctive characteristics of the XEC variant afford it a notable growth advantage, with more than 100 deaths recorded each week. This figure may be underestimated, given that a decline in the number of diagnostic tests conducted may result in fewer reported cases. In addition to the ongoing impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the current influenza season is exhibiting heightened severity, with the Australian strain of influenza B virus potentially exacerbating the overall health situation. The importance of a combined vaccination against influenza and COVID-19 is emphasised by experts, particularly given the expected peak during the Christmas period. Vaccination is particularly recommended for the elderly, the frail, and those living with chronic diseases, given their elevated risk of developing severe cases of both infections.
