A 49-year-old man has died from complications of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), which he contracted five years ago after being bitten by an infected mosquito in Colchester, Connecticut, USA. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the rare and severe disease affects the brain. It causes rapid deterioration of the body, leading to death in about 30% of cases. To prevent the transmission of the virus, Dr. Roy Gulick, Chief of Infectious Diseases at Weill Cornell Medicine and the New York-Presbyterian Hospital, recommends avoiding going out at sunset and using repellent sprays. These measures aim to limit the concentration of mosquitoes, thereby reducing the risk of virus transmission.
