The Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC) has activated the National Cholera Emergency Operations Center in response to a risk assessment by Nigerian authorities, who have declared a state of national emergency to manage the spread of a cholera epidemic that has resulted in over 50 fatalities. The NCDC has indicated that the country faces a high risk of cholera infection, with the mortality rate from the disease standing at 3.5% of reported cases.
NCDC has recently declared that Nigeria is facing a shortage of cholera vaccines and is expecting new supplies soon. National health officials have confirmed a partnership with state authorities to ensure rapid identification, analysis, and treatment of cases.
