What happened

According to a study published by CSL Seqirus regarding the trends of the flu season 2023/2024 in Western Europe, influenza rates were higher than those of other respiratory viruses, including COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus. Together with Spain, Italy was the country that recorded the highest peaks of cases of influenza compared to before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The flu epidemic peaked in late December with an estimated 18.45% prevalence and 1,085,500 cases. Influenza type A viruses were predominantly prevalent, accounting for 91.3% of cases, with the A(H1N1)pdm09 subtype being the most widespread. The research, utilizing surveillance data from national health authorities in Italy, Spain, Germany, and the United Kingdom, shows that the previous season experienced a rebound of influenza cases to levels seen before the pandemic in all the countries studied.
