What happened

On the French island of Mayotte, in the Indian Ocean, a 62-year-old woman died because of a spreading cholera epidemic. The event took place on Saturday 25 May at her home, where the intervention teams subsequently intervened to disinfect the house. She is the second victim on the island after a 3-year-old girl a few weeks earlier. In late April, the island recorded its first locally acquired cholera cases; some imported cases from the neighboring Comoros probably spread the illness.
